Facebook announced the new Messenger App for Android and iOS. This is a stand alone application that will allow users to send instant and private messages on the go from their mobile device. As of late, Facebook has combined your regular messages with the IM’s you receive on their site into the same category, so it makes complete sense to blend all your messages into a single app. Today we’ve installed it for Android and are giving it a little spin, see what we think after the break.

First off I was a bit surprised the actual logo and icon doesn’t show or mention Facebook whatsoever, just a simple lightning bolt looking design with a similar color theme — I guess they are just expecting all the Facebook followers to know and download it anyways. Right away it seems very similar to Google+ Huddle although I must admit they both have an issue with being reliable in regards to notifications.

Skype

Slowly but surely, a drip-feed of iPhone games and apps are making the transition to Android, but the process isn’t anywhere near as swift as it should be – and Skype’s meandering journey from App Store to Android Market is evidence of this fact.

An official app appeared in the early days of Android, but it was limited to Wi-Fi calls only and was quickly withdrawn soon afterwards – apparently due to US network Verizon’s exclusivity arrangement. Since then it’s been a long a tortuous wait.

A more robust edition of Skype, which offers free calls over a data connection, has been available on the iPhone for ages. Based on the desktop client, the mobile apps allows you to avoid call charges by using your phone’s 3G or Wi-Fi connection to call other Skype users. All that is required is a simple sign-up process, and you can even establish a unique Skype number for people to ring.

Go Launcher Ex

The GO Launcher EX Android App by GO Launcher Dev Team is a replacement for the default Android home screen. This app greatly improves on the default Android home screen in quite a few ways. In the dock menu located at the bottom of the screen you can now have 5 visible icons which you can customize as well as set to a gesture in order to launch them. In addition to the 5 you can add lots more which can be accessed by scrolling either left or right.

The power widget which comes with Android 2.2 you have the Power Widget as a default which takes up the width of the screen, with this app you can resize it. If you want to move a widget you can now drag it between each home screen and drop it in the one that you want by the thumbnail images that appear of your home screens. To manage your home screens simply scroll up and thumbnail images of the home screens will appear and allow you to manage them. The app drawer has a customization option where you can change the direction that you scroll them. You can also view your most recent used apps and clear your history as well as quite a few more settings for customization.

WhatsApp is undoubtedly an alternative to SMS and even MMS, that works via the net, thus avoiding any cost that normal messages incur.
